Home Birth

When choosing where to have your baby it is important to feel safe and secure. For many women being at home makes them feel exactly that, what better way to be calm than when you are surrounded by familiar home comforts. You have the freedom to move around, find comfortable positions and eat and drink when you want to. Research shows that planned homebirth is a safe choice and is less likely to result in unnecessary medical intervention. You are also less likely to pick up infections and more likely to have a good start to breastfeeding.

If you have chosen to have your baby at home your Midwife will stay with you during labour, helping and advising on ways to assist its progress and to cope with contractions. When your labour is advancing a second midwife will be called to be present at the birth.

Some women like to use a birthing pool or TENs machine for pain relief. Our Midwives are experienced in water birth so you can remain in the water if clinically appropriate. You can feel assured that you are in safe hands. Our equipment is waterproof so we will be able to monitor your baby without causing you unnecessary disruption.

If problems occur during labour your midwife will not hesitate to recommend transferring into hospital if the expertise of the staff and facilities are required. However, providing you with individualised personal care means that we will often find ways to make you comfortable at home, even if labour is taking a long time. We will not be trying to rush your labour along but go with your body’s rhythm providing all is well with you and the baby. If you are motivated to have your baby at home we will be too. What better start to your time as a new family than being tucked up in your own bed!
